D2R Mobile FAQ: Official Status, Game Ownership, Offline Play & More

Quick Answer

In one sentence
A free, open-source iOS/macOS compatibility layer that runs your own copy of D2R natively — offline, at 60 fps, with new endgame modes.
Biggest misconception
Not an emulator, not cloud gaming, and it distributes no game content. Your Switch copy's files do the work.
Cost
$0, MIT-licensed. The only costs are the game you must already own and, optionally, an Apple developer account.

The Basics

Is this an official Blizzard or Nintendo product?

No. It is an independent, non-commercial, open-source project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Blizzard Entertainment or Nintendo. Diablo and Blizzard Entertainment are trademarks of Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.; Nintendo Switch is a trademark of Nintendo.

Is it an emulator?

No. The game's own program executes natively on the device — the project rewrites only the handful of instructions that cannot run unchanged under Apple's kernel, and provides the platform services the game expects. There is no emulated CPU, which is why it holds 60 fps on a phone.

Does it distribute the game?

No — and this is a hard line in the project. The repository contains no game program, art, text, data tables, or shaders. All game content is generated on your own machine from your own legally-owned files.

Playing It

Do I need to own the game?

Yes — the Nintendo Switch release of Diablo II: Resurrected including the Reign of the Warlock expansion, updated to 1.0.34.0. Using it without the expansion is not supported.

Can I play online or multiplayer?

No. The game runs fully offline and needs no online account. Online play is explicitly out of scope.

Does it work offline entirely?

Yes. The one nuance: a self-built package has no iCloud save sync and no in-app resource downloads (those need the author's server or paid signing). Everything else — the entire game — is on-device.

English or Chinese?

Both, in full — including voice acting. Switch under Options → Custom and restart. English uses the original Diablo II wording, and all added features are translated too.

Legality & Safety

Is this legal?

The project's position: it provides tools and an install shell, requires your own purchased files, and distributes nothing. Whether running it violates any specific Terms of Service is for you to evaluate — we are a guide site, not lawyers, and this is not legal advice.

Is the source code open?

Yes — MIT licensed, with verification tooling built in: unit tests for the host and graphics layers, an equivalence check for every rewritten instruction, and scripted regression gates for the touch interface.

Answers are summaries of the d2r-mobile project README (accessed 2026-10-15), which is the authoritative source. When in doubt, trust the project's own documentation over any guide site, including this one.
